What is the first thought that comes to your mind when you hear or even read the following names?
Curt Schilling, Serena Williams, Michael Phelps, or even Kyrie Irving………
Let me guess….
Did you first thought have anything to do with the fact that all of those individual have played or still play sports?
Of course, they are all athletes who engage in several sports, to include: tennis, baseball, Olympic swimming, and even basketball. Some, if not all of the athletes mentioned will more than likely be remember as some of the greatest athletes in the World; however, each of these athletes also share another commonality, outside of the sports world.
What is that, you might ask?
Well, they each WRITE!!!!!
Now I am sure you are probably thinking, “duh, everyone writes”, and while that is true, when I say they each write, I mean they write in and keep a JOURNAL!!!
Who would have even imagined, right?
I know that is how I felt when I read a few articles that discussed the use of journal writing among athletes.
I felt validated upon reading those articles, knowing that I was not alone in my journal writing endeavors; however, I also felt compelled to bring more awareness to such an amazing intervention that has been found to empower athletes.
While some may consider journal writing to be a menial task usually done by children, more specifically females, reducing journal writing to the likes of keeping a diary; journal writing is an introspective tool.
Writing in a notebook and/or journal affords individuals, not only athletes, the ability to engage in self-reflection but also can be used to increase productivity, motivation, and decrease anxiety. A time to really identify areas in which one is doing well, areas in which they can improve, as well as more insight into their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Serena Williams, stated when talking about writing in her journal, “writing down your feelings in a notebook or journal can help clear out negative thoughts and emotions that keep you feeling stuck” (Williams and Williams, 2005).
While some athletes do write about their feelings in their journals, other athletes utilize a journal to jot down their goals, positive quotes, and as a means to reflect upon the events and activities or the day that were of significance to their overall growth, as a person and as an athlete.
So, how can you, as an athlete, begin the writing process?
It’s as simple as this……
Take out a piece of paper, grab your favorite pen or pencil, and begin writing down the first thought and/or thoughts that come to mind.
Write down your goals.
Identify areas in which you have made improvements and/or areas in which improvement is needed.
Better yet, make a list of your favorite inspirational quotes or even your workouts.
It does not have to be perfect and it doesn’t even have to make sense.
Because it is your writing and for you.
All I want you to remember is…….. ATHLETES Write!!!!
